jellytotz Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 I'm trying to troubleshoot a box (X5 64AI). Subscription channels are choppy/stuttering/jerky. In our home, our router broadcasts on 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz. This box is connected to the 2.4 Ghz, but this box can't "see" the 5 Ghz. Note: Our other X5 box (an AX-C) connects to the 5 Ghz just fine. Other devices can see the 5 Ghz. Tried rebooting the box, and router. Checked the router to make sure SSID isn't "hidden" So why can't this X5-64AI see the 5G? Thanks in advance! JT Quote
Emporium Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 (edited) Do you see a single SSID and router does the band steering, or do you see 2 separate SSID typically on that router (separate 2.4 and 5Ghz SSIDs) ? Do you see any OTHER 5Ghz SSID from neighbours or anything ? Or if you have an old router, even without connecting anything to it, can you plug it in, power it up and see if it broadcasts an SSID on 5Ghz and then check on the box. Just to make sure it is not some compatibility issue between chipsets. Edited November 28, 2024 by Emporium Quote

I normally see 2 separate SSIDs (which I named "something24G" and "something5G", but I don't see the latter in the list of available networks on the 64AI. 34 minutes ago, Emporium said: Do you see any OTHER 5Ghz SSID from neighbours or anything ? I don't know how to tell if they are JUST 5G or not, since BuzzTV only displays the names. But I used a WIFI app, and it seems the other 5G streams are single SSID (2.4G/5G). Note that I do see those SSIDs on the 64AI though. 34 minutes ago, Emporium said: Or if you have an old router, even without connecting anything to it, can you plug it in, power it up and see if it broadcasts an SSID on 5Ghz and then check on the box. No I don't have an old router to test with. 34 minutes ago, Emporium said: Just to make sure it is not some compatibility issue between chipsets. Wouldn't that be unlikely? As I had mentioned, I also have a X5 AX-C in the home, and that has no issues seeing the 5G. Also note, I checked the BuzzTV (the 64AI) and the software is up-to-date. Emporium Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 When you say it is UP to date, can you post the versions of firmware and software please ? I'm assuming you already tried to toggle the WiFi on/off ? If the box is configured to always "suspend" rather than power off ,can you please try by unplugging power to the box, wanting 5 seconds and the plugging it back in. Suspend mode can have some strange side effects which accumulate over time. Most importantly. Has this been an issue from the beginning or did it just start occurring ? How long have you owned the box, is it possibility still under warranty (check checking) ? If all else fails, you can try doing a hard factory reset and see if that fixes it. You can backup your server settings/favorites to a USB stick first (to make at least BuzzTV 5 easy to reconfigure afterwards). But any 3rd party apps would need to be reinstalled. If it is a software glitch, this can help. However if it is an underlying hardware failure of the 5Ghz radio, then there is not much that can be done. BTW: Did you try swapping the antenna (between left and right or even with other box) ? Maybe one of them is just dead. Different box, but exact same procedure : https://stbtalk.com/topic/300-factory-reset-hard-reset-xr4500-xrs4500/ 1 Quote

Oh... when I click the "UPDATE" section, it says it's up-to-date. I guess that's firmware? How do I check and update software? 14 hours ago, Emporium said: If the box is configured to always "suspend" rather than power off ,can you please try by unplugging power to the box, wanting 5 seconds and the plugging it back in. Yes, did that. 14 hours ago, Emporium said: Most importantly. Has this been an issue from the beginning or did it just start occurring ? This is my parent's box from their household. I only just got hold of it. They were having issues with it and I'm trying to do some troubleshooting on it in my home. 14 hours ago, Emporium said: If all else fails, you can try doing a hard factory reset and see if that fixes it. OK, I'll keep this in mind. 14 hours ago, Emporium said: However if it is an underlying hardware failure of the 5Ghz radio, then there is not much that can be done. Thats from main screen setting icon, updates I assume ? S/W should be listed there also typically it is 5.0.xxx. 1 Quote
jellytotz Posted November 29, 2024 Author Posted November 29, 2024 OK, I tried swapping the antennas. Didn't change anything. Firmware version is X5 64AI: V20240918. Current IPTV version: 5.0.938 I unplugged the 64AI and plugged in our AX-C. It can see other networks with "5G" in the name (which the 64AI cannot). So it looks like there is an issue with the 64AI not being able to see 5G networks. I guess the last thing to try is a hardware reset. Otherwise I guess it's a hardware issue with the 5G radio. 1 Quote

Emporium Posted Tuesday at 02:25 AM Posted Tuesday at 02:25 AM (edited) Does your router have 2 separate SSID for 2.4 and 5Ghz, or does the router use band steering and combine into 1 and it decides ? If your router has the option (most decent routers do), configure it to have 2 separate SSID, usually something like "MyAccesspoint" and "MyAccesspoint_5" which will allow you to choose which band you want to connect to. BTW: 918 is over a year old (and not even sure 918 was released to the public, it was 919 which was). You should be on .946 which was released back in January, and there were at least 2 other major updates between your version and .946. Can you post the Firmware version also, as printed in the "updates" screen. Edited Tuesday at 02:26 AM by Emporium 2 Quote

Emporium Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago Since this was a result of the firmware update which you took because of your posting in the other thread, WHY did you not just continue in that thread for continuity ? Anyhow. I just checked my X5 128AI and I am on the exact same firmware and software version and have no issues seeing at least 2 of my 5Ghz SSID and even my neighbour's. After trying Ryu's recommendation, if that does not help, then maybe try swapping the 2 Antenna, just in case one is damaged or not properly inserted. As another test, you can try doing another hardware factory reset (pin method) in case something is latched and causing the WiFi to malfunction. This way, after a factory reset, the "new" firmware will be able to start with a clean slate, instead some leftovers from the pre-flash. 1 Quote
