Seriously.. If your provider gave you that advise, then they are too ignorant and time to change.
I only use the integrated app, and it works better than any of the other crappy apps out there, and the UI blows most of them away.
I don't have any freezing. What box model are you using and what firmware/software versions ? You connected via WiFi or hardwired via ethernet ?
