Good quality, name brand USB 3 stick should be fine.  I have used many different one.  Event the Sandisk USB3 ones that Costco sells relatively cheap are pretty decent.  Try to avoid Amazon for those, since they often mix the sticks from many sellers together, if they are "same" part number and you can often get some cheap counterfeit ones.  Also, make sure to use the USB 3 port (blue conenctor), not the USB2 one

Can be used for TimeShift, PVR Recordings, VOD/Catchup Downloads, etc..

Also for transferring files or sideloading apps.  I typically have all the latest version of the apps I install on my boxes, all on one stick.  That way, if I need to reset a box, the reinstall is relatively simple.

I personally have many different cheap sticks and never had issue. however, just like Emporium mentioned above good quality, name brand usb3 is always the best way to go. 🙂
