Both are great boxes.  

U5 has the advantage of having a SATA bay underneath for a laptop size (2.5") hard drive.  I would recommend an SSD for it, since most mechanical HDD does get a little too hot.

If he plans on doing a lot of PVR recordings, then the U5 would be nicer.  But he would have the added expense of an SSD drive to take full advantage of it.

Otherwise an X5 would be a little cheaper and you can still use the PVR features if you want, by using either a decent USB 3.0 stick or external HDD, plugged into the USB3 port..
