I was just given the box as an early Christmas gift. What does a soft reset and a hard reset mean?

This afternoon we were in the middle of watching on netflix a movie, and BuzzTV stopped the movie and we were forced to update. Now we are receiving an error "BuzzTV Launcher keeps stopping". Rebooted, reset internet, unplugged power and restarted etc. As soon as we press the home button to go to the Settings to reset, we receiving the error message "BuzzTV Launcher keeps stoppping. app info or close app" Neither works. The TV channels can be watched, but nothing else. Kindly help.
