BT-500 / TCL Pairing unsuccessful

Hi all. The large Vol + and - toggle on the left side of the remote isn't changing the volume on my TCL TV.  The small Vol +, - and mute buttons do, however, work in controlling the volume. Also, the red TV power button doesn't work on the TV as well. I went through the auto pairing setup for the remote and it correctly identified the TV as a TCL, but during all of the code checks in the auto setup, I never saw the onscreen volume indicator.  It gets to the end of the auto setup and says "success", but clearly it's not successful.  Nothing blocking the TV IR sensor as the original TV remote controls power and volume via IR fine. Ii have tried auto setup multiple times, as well as both methods of manual setups, but I never see the onscreen volume indicator during any pairing method. New batteries as well.

Any other ideas to try?  Thanks much.
